What is Work-Based Learning?

Not just an ‘internship’ programme —
but a workforce development strategy

WBL is learning through real practice, co-designed by enterprises and vocational education institutions to build job-ready skills. Since 1981, this model has helped Switzerland become one of the world’s most innovative nations.

WBL is

  • Vocational learning through real participation in production processes and services within the enterprise
  • Based on a vocational curriculum co-designed by enterprises and vocational education institutions
  • Coached by experienced instructors from both the enterprise and vocational school
  • Builds job-ready skills from the very first day of training
  • Upon completion, the company where you trained will consider hiring you immediately.
  • A strategy for developing quality talent aligned with employer needs and the real labour market

The Skills Crisis

Challenges Enterprises in Laos Are Facing

01Hiring raw labour without the skills that companies and enterprises need

02Must provide additional training — time-consuming — unstructured — no qualification certification

03High turnover rate in the early employment period

04Supervisors overburdened with unstructured training and no support in developing training and assessment packages

05Low productivity due to workers lacking relevant skills

“That means profit you are forced to lose — and keep losing.”
